Sixteen people died on the spot when a KIA Grandbird bus with registration number GT, 5629-18 crashed head-on with another Kia Granbird bus with registration number GE 5510-15 at Akim Asafo on the Accra-Kumasi highway.

According to reports, the driver of the KIA Granbird bus with registration number GT 5629-18 with passengers on board from Accra towards Kumasi direction on reaching a section of the road at Akim Asafo, made an unsafe overtaking without observing traffic from the opposite direction.

In the process, he crashed head-on with the other bus, leading to the death of 16 from both buses.

Reports indicate that both drivers passed on immediately after the crash.

The Suhum District Police say several passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital for treatment.

“The bodies were removed and sent to the same hospital mortuary for preservation, identification and autopsy,” the Police stated.

It also noted that the Suhum and Bunso Kibi Police Command, Suhum MTTD, Patrol team and Akim Asafo Police were at the scene to direct the traffic.

Meanwhile, accident vehicles were towed from the scene to a safer place for a free flow of traffic.
