Ewurabena Aubynn launches Ablekuma North supporters’ union as Akweibu clinch maiden victory cup

The Ablekuma North Supporters Union was founded by the Member of Parliament for Ewurabena Aubynn to encourage grassroots sports development in the constituency and rally support for Ghana’s national teams.

The inaugural Ewurabena Aubynn triumph Cup, a community football competition held to honor her triumph in the 2024 parliamentary elections and promote young involvement in sports, took place at the same time as the launch.

Residents from all throughout the constituency attended the event, which was coordinated with the Ablekuma North Sports Union and took place on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the Wesley Grammar School Astro-Turf.

The newly established Ablekuma North Supporters Union is expected to serve as a platform to mobilise residents, particularly young people, to support Ghana’s national sporting teams while championing sports development and community initiatives within the area.

As part of the celebrations, Akweibu emerged champions of the inaugural Victory Cup after defeating Otaten in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw in regulation time. Both teams represent communities within the constituency.

Organisers say the Ewurabena Aubynn Victory Cup will become an annual event aimed at nurturing young football talent while fostering unity, discipline and healthy competition among the youth.

Speaking during the launch, Aubynn stated that the program is a component of her larger plan to use sports as a catalyst for community cooperation and youth development. Sports have the ability to foster leadership in young people, strengthen discipline, and bring communities together.

We are giving young talent in Ablekuma North the chance to flourish while simultaneously mobilizing support for our national teams through this project,” she stated. Additionally, she stated that the supporters’ union would assist in establishing an organized network of community activists and volunteers who would support development projects throughout the area.

The Minister for Sports and Recreation and Member of Parliament for Buem, Kofi Iddie Adams, who served as Special Guest of Honour, commended the initiative, describing it as consistent with the sports development agenda of President John Mahama.

Jake Sampah, the captain of the Akweibu squad, thanked the Ablekuma North congressman for developing the platform and promised that the team will continue to compete in next tournaments.

Otaten, the runners-up, also received a cash incentive for their efforts, while Akweibu was awarded both the tournament trophy and a cash prize. Adamu Musah Kalamu, the Ablekuma North Assembly’s municipal chief executive, was also present.

Sports fans, youth organizations, traditional leaders, and political supporters came together for the event, which transformed it into a lively celebration of local talent and community spirit.
